Clemson Center for Career and Professional Development

Brooklyn Noell-babaCo-op Ambassador:
Kristen O'Brien

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Graduation Date: December 2019
Co-op Company: Itron

Why did you decide to co-op?
I decided to co-op for many different reasons, but the main reason is I wanted to get a better idea of what kind of job I would want when I graduate. I had a few internships before my co-op, but internships are very limited time-wise. My co-op gave me an opportunity to go more in-depth into a specific field. Not only have I gained valuable experience, but I have a clearer understanding of a career I would like to pursue.

What types of projects did you work on?
I worked on many different types of projects while at Itron. This is one of the reasons I enjoyed my co-op experience so much. Some of these projects were line optimization, testing, new station implementation, tooling design, and equipment specification.

Describe your relationship with your mentor(s) and other colleagues:
I really enjoyed working with my mentor and other colleagues. Although we had a very laid-back relationship, it was kept professional when needed. My mentor was always willing to help and answer any questions I might have had.

What was your most memorable moment on assignment?
My most memorable moment while on assignment was getting to interview prospective co-op students. It was an eye-opening experience to be on the other side of the table as the interviewer.

What aspect of your co-op assignment do you feel will be the most beneficial after you graduate?
I think the most beneficial aspect of my time on assignment was the diverse experience that I obtained. My mentor immersed me in various types of projects which helped me learn what I am interested in.

What advice do you have for other students looking to complete the co-op program?
You only get out of your co-op what you put in. No matter where you go, the value you gain and how much effort and enthusiasm you put into your co-op is up to you.
