Clemson Center for Career and Professional Development

Co-op Ambassador:
Amol Kumthekar

Major: Industrial Engineering
Graduation Date: December 2019
Co-op Company: Club Car

Why did you decide to co-op?
I wanted to get experience in industry that would apply what I was learning and allow me to get a feel for what industries I would want to be in after graduation.

If you received multiple offers, what made you select the company you chose?
Club Car offered me the best chance to see various sides of engineering and get experience in more than just a design role.

What types of projects did you work on?
I worked on real long term and short term projects such as our new lithium powertrain and manufacturing issues brought up by the line.

Describe your relationship with your mentor(s) and other colleagues:
There was a very positive relationship between my mentors, other colleagues and myself. I frequently asked them questions about the work I was doing and they responded with helpful feedback. We were also able to talk about things outside of work and I got to know them on a more personal level.

What was your most memorable moment on assignment (Biggest “Aha!” or biggest “Oops!” moment)?
I think the most memorable moment was when I designed an injection molded spacer and it was approved to move forward after I left. It really felt that I had made a difference by solving one of the issues that was identified

What aspect of your co-op assignment do you feel will be the most beneficial after you graduate?
The broadness of the projects that I worked on. There were many projects that I worked on, some were more design process oriented but others were more project management and I enjoyed getting to see both sides of engineering to allow me to make an informed decision on what I want to do for my career.

Describe how you feel you changed/grew as a person and student as a result of your co-op.
I grew in m y leadership skills and my technical skills. I was able to get into the flow of work but also adapt back to school when it came time to take classes. I feel like getting this industry experience makes me more confident about myself in my future career.

What was the most challenging part of your co-op?
Some of the projects I was working on incorporated content that we did not cover in our classes so I had to learn those topics on the fly. Learning this while still being productive on my other projects was probably the most challenging part of my rotations.

Describe an instance where you applied something from your coursework to your co-op assignment, or vice versa.
In my last rotation I had to do a lot of stress and inertia calculations so I used a lot of what I had learned in my mechanics classes when calculating these values.
